Whether you’re a business owner, a freelancer, or just someone wanting to stay on top of their tax game, this video is for you. So grab a pen and let’s make sure you don’t miss any deadlines. Let’s kick things off with the first big date, January 15th.

This is the last day to pay your estimated taxes for 2024. If you didn’t cover your income tax throughout withholding, now’s your chance to make that final estimated tax payment using Form 1040-ES. But here’s a quick tip.

If you’re planning to file your 2024 tax return and pay your full balance by January 31st, 2025, you can skip this payment. Just make sure you don’t miss that end of the month deadline. The second important tax due date is January 31st, which is the busiest tax day of the month.

Here’s what you need to know. First, if you’re an employer, this is the deadline to send Form W-2 to all your employees who work for you in 2024. Remember, your team needs the Form W-2 to file their own taxes, so don’t leave them hanging.

If you’re a business owner, you will also need to provide Form 1099 information statements to anyone you make certain payments in 2024. This includes compensation to non-employees, dividends, interest, royalties, and profit-sharing distributions. A pro tip, double-check your records to ensure accuracy.

But that’s not all for January 31st. If you have employees, here is a checklist of payroll-related forms that are due on January 31st. First form, Form 941, is your fourth quarter 2024 payroll report.

The second payroll report is Form 942, the annual payroll report for 2024. And also, make sure you file the state fourth quarter and annual payroll reports in the state your business is registered. So take time to review your payroll records now so you’re not scrambling at the end of the month.

January is packed with deadlines, but staying organized is the key to avoiding late filing penalties with the IRS. So if this video has helped you, don’t forget to like, subscribe, and share with another business owner that can take advantage of this information. Thank you for watching and God bless you.

SUMMARIZATION

Staying on top of tax deadlines is crucial, especially as January 2025 approaches. Missing important tax dates can lead to late filing penalties, which can easily be avoided by planning ahead. This post highlights the key tax deadlines in January 2025, ensuring you remain compliant and penalty-free.

January 15, 2025: Estimated Tax Payment Deadline

The first major deadline of the year is January 15. This date marks the final opportunity to pay estimated taxes for the 2024 tax year. If your income tax hasn’t been covered through withholding, now is the time to submit your payment using Form 1040-ES.

However, there is a strategic option to consider. If you plan to file your 2024 tax return and pay your full balance by January 31, 2025, you can skip this payment. This approach can ease cash flow at the start of the year but requires diligence in meeting the end-of-month deadline.

January 31, 2025: The Busiest Tax Day

January 31 is packed with tax responsibilities, particularly for employers and business owners. Missing this day could not only affect your own filings but also impact your employees and contractors.

Key Forms Due:

  • Form W-2: Employers must provide all employees with Form W-2 for wages earned in 2024. This document is essential for their tax filings, and failure to distribute it on time can delay your team’s returns.
  • Form 1099: If you have paid non-employees, such as freelancers, or distributed dividends, interest, royalties, or profit-sharing amounts, you must issue Form 1099 to them. This form serves as crucial documentation for their income reporting.

Payroll-Related Filings:

  • Form 941: This quarterly payroll tax report covers the last quarter of 2024.
  • Form 940: The annual Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) return is due.
  • State Payroll Reports: Ensure you file both the fourth quarter and annual state payroll reports. Double-checking payroll records in advance can prevent last-minute errors.

Staying Organized to Avoid Penalties

Tax season can feel overwhelming, but organization is key. Create a checklist for the month to ensure you meet each deadline. Schedule reminders and allocate time for document preparation to avoid the rush at the end of January.
