ITIN number is a tax processing number issued by the IRS. The numbers consist of 9 digits. ITIN numbers are issued to those individuals who do not have, or are not eligible to obtain a SSN from SSA. These numbers are issued to individuals, regardless of their immigration status. Those individuals are required to file a federal income tax return in order to receive an ITIN number, unless they are already meeting the requirements.

Why is an ITIN number needed?

ITIN numbers are used for taxes only. They serve no other purpose. The IRS issues these numbers to individuals to help them with U.S. tax laws and to keep track of all individuals who do not have a SSN. ITIN numbers do not help with immigration statuses nor do they prove eligibility for SSN.

Do I need an ITIN Number?

If you do not have a SSN are if you are not eligible for one, you must have an ITIN number if you are required to file a federal income tax return. If you are eligible for SSN do not apply for ITIN number. Apply only for ITIN if the SSA says you cannot have a SSN. To receive a SSN you must complete SS-5 Form. According to the law, an alien individual cannot have both ITIN number and SSN.

How do I apply for an ITIN number?

In order to apply for an ITIN you must fill the Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number form, better known as the W-7 form to apply for ITIN. You must also provide some documents along with the form. Attached documents can include original proof of identification, foreign status documents, a valid federal income tax return, etc.

You may also receive the aid of an IRS-authorized Acceptance Agent or you can pay a little visit to an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center. TACs proved help in person with ITIN applications. Those applying for ITIN outside The United States can contact the IRS as well.

When should I apply for an ITIN number?

You can apply for an ITIN number any time you would like to. Though keep in mind that the documents you attach along with your W-7 form are all up to date. If your tax return documents are not the current ones or are past their due dates you can be charged with penalties/and or interest.
